Course Reflection

In general this course was pretty good, I had no idea before about pop culture. In this class I realized that pop culture is everywhere and it has a huge influence in our lives. Beside the learning part I also had a lot fun with the presentations, I liked my led zeppelin and nirvana presentations and I also enjoyed my classmates presentations. I also had very good classmates and we had a lot of fun in this course. We alsoo surfed the internet several times and we created a blog that is pretty cool too. I enjoyed this course and I learned about pop culture now I know what is it about.

Reflection 3

This unit has been really good. Personally I can say my favorite unit because it is about music and I am always listening to the music. I like many kind of genres like The Beatles, Guns'n Roses, Led Zepellin Nirvana those are like old school. But I also listen the new ones like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Kanye West , Nelly Furtado and some music in Spanish too. We went to the House of Blues and we had a great time over there but also we learned how Blues has influenced everything in the American Culture of Music. How the African American used instruments to create music and make the hard work easier to get over.

We also had some genres presentations where we got a little touch about all the different genres and again how all of them come from Blues. We talked a little bit about Rap and we said that this kind of music is designed to bother the parents. This kind of music have strong messages about something that is happening in the world might be war, discrimination, sex, women etc. Finally we had a song Presentation where we had to choose a song and describe it, we had a lot of good presentations and really good songs I enjoyed this unit so much.

mmmmmmm a favoritee song? That is a really good question because I dont have a favorite one. It depends about my mood, sometimes when I am kind of down I listen the beatles or guns n roses.. Sometimes I am in Party mode so I listen some regueton like Pitbull or Wisin y Yandel or some Salsa music. Im listening to the music all the time even when I take a shower hehehhehe but music makes me feel relaxed that's why I am always in a good mood...

House of Blues

The field trip to the House of Blues was amazing I had a super great time, I sang, I danced, it was so chilling... The whole show was really interesting the lady who was hosting was really goood giving her speech she caught my attention. She talked about how blues influences everything in the American music. I liked the whole show, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Hendrix, The beatles, Michael Jackson, what about the guy who sang rap that was pretty good also... It was good to see how everyone was dancing and dancing and hoow muusic can create this sensation of happiness and forget about everything for a while... We should go again :)..

Reflection

            Well this second period of pop culture class was really good.  We had many activities, the class has been super entertaining.  We learned about many aspects about people's self image.  The first one is biological (our gender, our sexual preference, and our physical appearance).  The second one is cultural   (the culture of our ancestors and pop culture).

            We also learned some terms like mainstream, counter, ethnocentrism, that I haven't heard before but now I now.  We learned about identity in a virtual world, and how people create avatars to express themselves.  How they feel so free because they know they can change whatever they want to change like race, skin color, accent etc.  And the best part is that nobody can't judge them.

            My aha moment was when we were talking about the fads and I just remember some things that I used to do, for example some songs that were really popular in a short period of time.  My bumper sticker about this unit would be “ not an avatar this is real”. 

            I didn't know anything about pop culture now I know how pop culture is formed: objects, people, events and places.  Most common things that we have been using and we are going to use are part of pop culture such as Ipods, toys, Mcdonalds, movies, actors, singers now I have an idea that how those things influence us.

What have I learned in this Pop Culture class? Well after this short period of time in this class, I have learned some basic concepts about culture for example that Culture is all around us and Culture is learned not inherited. I also know the four characteristics of Culture: Inculturation, Culture is shared, is symbolically transmitted and expressed, Culture is adaptive. I also learn about the Iceberg model, and there are 3 parts: the first one is Technical Culture (people know the rules when someone breaks a rule people go crazy, we follow some rules, but we can not explain them), the second one is Formal Culture (people know the rules, if you break a rule nothing happens you can fix it), the last one is Deep or Informal (that when the rules are broken).

I also learned some terms of Culture that are present in each culture and I didn't know that those terms exist that was my A-ha moment with Mainstream and with Counter. Was interesting to me to know how is called people who do the normal and common things, and how is called the people who do the opposite.

If I had to express my knowledge on a bumper sticker it would be “unstoppable culture” that means culture is always changing. I also learned about about the Melting pot and the Salad Bowl. The Melting Pot is for example when you moved to a different city totally in a different culture that will be a moment when you will acquire some things from the other culture. The Salad Bowl is just a mix of ethnicities that compliment each other. I also learned about Cultural Identity, and the 2 factors that influence people's self-image and there are: Biological (gender, sexual preference), and Cultural (our ancestors, popular culture.).

As I said before I really liked the Mainstream and Counter (Terms of Culture), because now I really know the difference between those 2 things, I can identified who is a mainstream and who is a Counter and I can tell I am part of the Mainstream group. I can not wait to see what else is coming in this class is really interesting and I am just excited about it.
